Photonic encryption technology is developed by designing polymeric inverse opals to have lithographically-featured wettability contrast. The encrypted inverse opals disclose combinatorial codes of color pattern and unique spectrum only when decoding solution is deposited. In addition, the codes are highly reproducible for repeated uses and long storage time. Moreover, the photonic films are mechanically stable, enabling transfer onto any surfaces.
