Photonic microcapsules: Cholesteric liquid crystals are microfluidically encapsulated by double shells of ultrathin alignment layer and elastic membrane. The alignment layer renders the liquid crystals to have planar alignment and elastic membrane makes the microcapsules reconfigurable. This class of photonic microcapsules will provide new opportunity for various photonic applications.
