A communication in Angewandte Chemie on chirped 3D photonic crystals has been accepted for publication.
Chirped 3D photonic crystals have been created using colloidal particle diffusion in a photocurable medium. The variations in lattice constant create a color gradient that spanned the entire visible range. By combining the functionality of chirped photonic crystals with a CMOS sensor array, a miniaturized on-chip spectrometer system with a minimum resolution of 0.09 nm is developed. Diffusion-driven structural transformations may open new avenues for engineering the optical properties of 3D photonic crystals.
